Union Budget 2025: Nirmala Sitharaman Unveils Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme and AI Centre for Education

In her Union Budget 2025 speech, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed the introduction of the ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme’ to provide students in schools and higher education with digital books in Indian languages. “We propose to implement the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme to offer digital Indian language books for school and higher education. This initiative aims to help students grasp their subjects more effectively,” Sitharaman stated.

In another significant announcement, the government plans to establish a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for education, with a total allocation of INR 500 crore. This will complement the three existing AI centres of excellence for agriculture, health, and sustainable cities announced in 2023.

Additionally, to enhance school infrastructure, Sitharaman announced the establishment of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in government schools over the next five years. “This initiative will nurture curiosity, innovation, and a scientific mindset among young students,” the Finance Minister emphasized.

As part of the BharatNet project, broadband connectivity will be extended to all secondary schools in rural areas. The government is also focusing on upskilling the youth to build a future-ready workforce. Sitharaman revealed plans to set up five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling, leveraging global expertise and partnerships. These centres will equip young people with the necessary skills for “Make for India, Make for the World” manufacturing. “The partnerships will encompass curriculum design, trainer development, a skills certification framework, and periodic evaluations,” she added.

Furthermore, to support higher education, additional infrastructure will be developed in the five IITs established after 2014, accommodating 6,500 more students. Sitharaman also mentioned plans to expand hostel and infrastructure facilities at IIT Patna.
