Interview with Joydip Kanjilal on the future of Machine Learning and Internet of Things

Machine Learning and Internet of Things (IoT) will make a huge change in 2017. Even though there are products surroundingĀ IoT, we expect more of them to arrive by the end of 2017. There are reports that many companies are gearing up to release new products developed using AI, Machine Learning and IoT.

We managed to catch Joydip Kanjilal, former Microsoft Most Valuable Professional and author of over dozen books to know more about the past, present and future of Machine Learning and Internet of Things. Why not you read the interview and give your valuable comments.

Can you explain the real meaning of Machine learning?

Machine learning (the ability of machines to exhibit intelligence) is a type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn without being explicitly programmed. It is a sub-field of computer science that evolved from the study of pattern recognition and computational learning theory in artificial intelligence.

What will happen if there is no machine learning?

There have been so many applications designed and developed using machine learning. If there is no machine learning, data predictability as it has been over the past few months, would fail. The prediction APIs like the ones from Google and BigML would cease to exist.

Do you think machine learning can excel in the upcoming years?

Yes – absolutely! The demand for professionals with expertise in Machine Learning is growing day by day since the amount of data in the world is increasing.

What do you think about the growth of machine learning in India?

ML-India has been fostering data science and machine learning in our country for quite some time now. Machine Learning has already been applied in cyber security challenges to detect and analyze the increasing security threats. There are many opportunities, and many companies have started investing in machine learning.

Do you find any usefulness in Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things provides a seamless, all-encompassing and ubiquitous network of devices and is instrumental in creating a connected, smarter world around you. The IoT promises to integrate big data, cloud, billions of devices and the network fabric. It is useful, very useful. The possibilities are enormous for all industries alike. All aspects of the IoT are likely to be huge, if not ginormous! Cisco has estimated that by the year 2020, more than 50 billion devices will be connected by IoT.

Do you think Internet of Things can prevent rail accidents?

Absolutely – why not? Data mining in road rail traffic plays a crucial role in this. The ability to leverage the use of predictive analytics, usage of digital image processing techniques such as path tracking will help in this regard.

Which area benefited the most by Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things has been transforming from a futuristic buzzword to a reality in no time. It has been growing exponentially. The cloud plays a major part in IoT to provide the needed infrastructure for its implementation. The big data platforms have been growing faster due to the IoT boom. Some of the concrete use cases and IoT application areas include agriculture, healthcare, smart homes, smartphones, etc.

Do you think Indian industry is rightly tapping Internet of Things?

The IoT ecosystem in our country is driven mainly by the Government, the industries, and the startup companies. The growth of IoT largely depends on the policies of the govt and it remains to be seen how fast our govt can get ready to reap the benefits of it albeit all its challenges, i.e., privacy, security, legalities involved, economical and development issues, etc.

How do you see the growth of Machine Learning and Internet of Things in 2017?

I’m sure ML and IoT will continue to grow in 2017. Although the IoT is still in its nascent stage, it is growing fast. Albeit many challenges, opportunities are plenty. With more and more connected devices, Big Data will get more “cloudier”.
