The Armed Forces Medical College – A Review

The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a leading medical college located in Maharashtra. It is regarded as a centre of excellence in research and education. The college was founded in 1948 and is presently governed by the Indian Armed Forces.

As of 2013, Armed Forces Medical College is ranked 3rd in India. According to reports, more than 6000 graduates have passed out from the college.

The main aim of the creation of Graduate section in AFMC in 1962 was to increase the intakes of graduate into the Armed Force. The college is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to conduct five year MBBS course along with 6 months teaching internship program.

Out of 130 seats offered by AMC every year, 105 are reserved for boys, 25 for girls and the remaining 10 seats for the SC/ST candidates.

The Armed Forces Medical College offers training programs to undergraduates, post graduates, dental post graduates in addition to paramedical & nursing.

Government of India has recognized Armed Forces Medical College as a research centre for identification of pathogens, confirmation of disease and classification of blood disorders. The college also is an approved referral center designated by WHO for certain diseases such as HIV-regional laboratory and center for rickettsial diseases.

The Armed Forces Medical College is the first college to start up Surgery Department in India in 1950 and is accountable for serving the well qualified & excellent specialists to the Armed Forces.

In order to qualify for MBBS course, students have to pass an objective type written exam All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), conducted on 28 centres all over India. Once they have successfully passed the written test, an interview will be conducted to assess their skills and knowledge.

After the completion of MBBS course from AFMC, candidates are required to work as commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. They will have to sign a written bond obliging this rule at the time of joining first year course.

While 50% of candidates are given permanent commission after completion of MBBS course, rest of them are given short services commission jobs.

The college provides all sports facilities such as Tennis, basketball, playground & swimming pool. Moreover, an open air cinema hall screen is also available in the campus.

Some of the hospitals affiliated with Armed Forces Medical College include Command Hospital (Southern Command), Military Hospital (Cardio Thoracic Centre), Artificial Limb Centre and Military Hospital (Khadki).

The Armed Forces Medical College has departments for Anatomy, Surgery, Biochemistry, Dermatology, Pharmacology and Hospital Administration. The faculties encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities such as dancing, music and sports in addition to hobbies, adventure and debating clubs. Moreover, the college also launched an activity called Musimatics.

The Armed Forces Medical College is surrounded by gardens, trees and beautiful flowers. The campus also has a canteen facility which provides wide range of dishes. Moreover, the campus also has a state of the art auditorium named Dhanvantri, where all high standard medical conferences are held and separate hostels for both boys and girls.

As of 2014, The Armed Forces Medical College is ranked 3 among top best medical colleges of India by India today.
